Yesterday challenged my emotions. Before church, I received a phone call with some surprising news that gave me a second’s worth of panic and forced me to cling to God’s promises that He never leaves us nor forsakes us.

As Sunday school ended, Hubby called my cell phone with sad news about a beloved family member whose days are numbered as cancer ravages her body.

With a heavy heart and shrouded in prayer by my wonderful friend, I headed for the sanctuary. Our pianist was out sick so we sang to prerecorded music.

Each song hugged my heart with promises of hope. One particular song really touched me:

Who Am I by Casting Crowns

Who am I, that the Lord of all the earth
Would care to know my name
Would care to feel my hurt
Who am I, that the Bright and Morning Star
Would choose to light the way
For my ever wandering heart

Not because of who I am
But because of what You’ve done
Not because of what I’ve done
But because of who You are
I am a flower quickly fading
Here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean
Vapor in the wind
Still You hear me when I’m calling
Lord, You catch me when I’m falling
And You’ve told me who I am
I am Yours, I am Yours

Who am I, that the eyes that see my sin
Would look on me with love and watch me rise again
Who am I, that the voice that calmed the sea
Would call out through the rain
And calm the storm in me

Not because of who I am
But because of what You’ve done
Not because of what I’ve done
But because of who You are

I am a flower quickly fading
Here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean
Vapor in the wind
Still You hear me when I’m calling
Lord, You catch me when I’m falling
And You’ve told me who I am
I am Yours

Not because of who I am
But because of what You’ve done
Not because of what I’ve done
But because of who You are

I am a flower quickly fading
Here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean
Vapor in the wind
Still You hear me when I’m calling
Lord, You catch me when I’m falling
And You’ve told me who I am
I am Yours

I am Yours
Whom shall I fear
Whom shall I fear
‘Cause I am Yours
I am Yours

Those lyrics reminded me we are not alone in our struggles. Whether we’re struggling with finances, saying goodbye to a passing loved one, dealing with job stress–or no job, praying our prodigals home, or finding the right words to say or write, God hears us when we call out in His name. When we cling to the cross we have nothing to fear. We are His.

That's a beautiful song, Lisa. I've always liked it.

I don't know if you or your family member have ever seen the movie Shadowlands, but if not, it might be comforting for you at this time. More than any other film I've ever seen, it helped me understand suffering and death.

    You're in my prayers.

That's a wonderful song! I hope things work out for your family.
Hmmm, I can't think of a specific song right now that's speaking to me.

I've always loved that song. Music is such a gift. It ministers to me all the time. Right now, the one I love goes like….."Love is a huricane, I am a tree. Bending a knee, to the weight of his wind and mercy…" Don't know what it's called (I never do). How He loves us?? Anyway, I love that song right now.

Lisa – prayers for you and your loved one as your travel through this dark valley. Prayers that God would hold you both up and guide your steps.
